Duchess is depicted as a violent young man whose intolerable actions lead to several deaths. The book centers on violent retribution as Duchess eliminates people who framed him. Duchess and Woolly have escaped from the detention center and want to go to their home settings. The plan to go to San Francisco is aborted when Duchess and Woolly show up and insist to get helped to go to New York. Billy proposes a plan to go to San Francisco and locate their mother. When he gets home, Emmet finds out that their farm is being foreclosed upon due to debts. Warden William encourages him not to dwell on the past. Emmet is remorseful based on the past events that occurred culminating in his sentencing. Emmet’s father, Charles Watson, has passed on and no one is left to take care of Billy, Emmet’s younger brother. The story begins with Warden Williams escorting Emmet Watson to his home after being released from the juvenile detention center.
